This year's production is The Kid from Simcoe Street, the coming-of-age story of retired poet and Ontario Superior Court Justice James Clarke, who grew up poor on the wrong side of the tracks in downtown Peterborough during 1940s.

In our adaptation of this moving World War II era memoir, James Clarke recalls growing up in the poor and alcohol-ridden neighbourhood of downtown Peterborough.

As a boy, his father had been a foot soldier, but after coming home from the battlefields he turned to manic drinking and belligerence, shattering his wife’s dreams, and casting a dark shadow over James’ boyhood.

This story, told with emotion that is unflinching in its honesty, lets us see just how remarkable it is that James Clarke became not only a man esteemed and honoured as a judge of the Superior Court of Ontario, but as a respected poet, too.

Into the Woods is now over; the costumes hung, the set stripped, and the scripts returned. We want to thank everyone for going “into the woods” with us and supporting the St. James Players!

Who We Are

St James Players is a community group dedicated to theatre and music. From our simple beginnings in 1972, St. James Players have entertained thousands of Peterborough residents and visitors alike with our musical theatre productions.

St. James Players started out in a very modest way performing in the church hall, borrowing costumes, improvising a stage and using whatever was available for sets. Ours was a simple goal: to provide musical theatre opportunities for the young people of our community. As our performers and backstage workers became more experienced, our productions became more ambitious. We moved out into the community, renting larger venues to stage these full-scale musical productions for our growing audiences.

Traditionally, we have presented a major fall production at Showplace every Fall, as well as a Spring production that always features young performers and family friendly shows at St. James United Church. While we had to put our typical schedule on hold through much of the 2020-2022 years, we are excited to be getting back to doing what we love: giving the people of Peterborough the chance to experience amazing community theatre!
